University of South Florida’s Invention Convention Florida Celebrates Historic Win by Young Florida Inventor

The University of South Florida’s Invention Convention Florida state program in partnership with USF Research & Innovation and the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame proudly announce that Daniel Park, an 11th-grade student from Hillsborough County, Florida, has made history as the first Floridian to win the Best in Show award at the prestigious Invention Convention Americas 2024 competition, which featured over 130 finalists, selected from more than 178,000 participants, who were judged by a panel of 30 international experts.

Take a trip to the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame Museum in Tampa, Florida and among the many inventions on display is an HDMAX QUAD CAMERA circa 2005 the world’s first high-definition scan camera. Deployed by NASA in 2006 on the International Space Station, this advanced imaging technology paved the way for everyday applications, including and being adopted for continuous use by Panavision in movie production. We are excited to highlight the inventor of this groundbreaking technology as one of our inaugural inductees in the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame 2014 class. His name is Dr. William E. Glenn of Boca Raton, Florida.

Two highly accomplished University of South Florida faculty members have been named to the 2024 class of the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame. USF engineering professors Sylvia Wilson Thomas and Daniel Yeh are among the nine inductees in this year’s class receiving the prestigious honor for their notable contributions to scientific and technological advancements. USF alumna Rachana Vidhi was also selected for the hall of fame.

In our ongoing quest to celebrate the groundbreakers of the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame, we are honored to turn the spotlight to one of our 2014 inaugural inductees, Dr. Shin-Tson Wu. Dr. Wu was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his remarkable work in liquid crystal research and his resulting patent portfolio for next-generation liquid crystal displays (LCDs), adaptive optics, laser beam steering, and new photonic materials, all of which have had a significant impact on display technology worldwide. Perhaps his most significant development to date is the mixed-mode twisted nematic LC cell, which is integral to high-resolution, high-brightness reflective LCDs, including direct-view and projection types. In other words, the screen you’re most likely using to read this article contains Dr. Wu’s groundbreaking contribution, the LCD.
